You may be wondering how this came to be. The conversation went like this:
Catherine Johnson: I saw this sand pendulum video and thought something like that would be a great addition [to Soil Stories]. Maybe a soil pendulum? Would you be willing to help in some way?
Mike Miller: Yes I would be very interested. It’s a pretty cool coincidence. When I was a little kid (5 or 6) my dad built a pendulum drawing machine in our basement. He used ball point pens, or sharpies to make almost identical to the video drawings on paper.
Fast forward a few months...
Catherine Johnson: The new plan for Soil Stories is that it will be a virtual event with a week of activities/presentations/discussions each day leading up to the big reveal of soil stories on our website on Earth Day, April 22, 2021. Would you be willing to build a soil pendulum and create a video about the making of it, and how it functions?
Mike Miller: That’s cool, I’m glad it’s going forward. That is an interesting idea. I have an old grain silo at my place that a 45 foot tall soil pendulum would fit in. But I am not much of a video maker. The sound echo in the silo is amazing, maybe that could be incorporated into the video.
And so WE BEGIN...
